Case Study: Increasing Copier Performance

Downtime of mission-critical office equipment immediately impacts productivity and profitability – an issue of mounting consequence as one non-profit organization based in the mid-South discovered.

A brand new mid-volume 60ppm color copier/printer required an average of 3.75 service calls per month for the first five months after a nationally-recognized office products manufacturer installed the device in the non-profit’s headquarters. The machine’s mean output between service failures was only 7,173 copies per month. The distributor invested more than $4,000 in parts, including MFP board sensors, plus labor costs, during the short five months after the company purchased the device. Non-volatile random access memory had been lost as well, resulting in missed billing of 39,368 impressions.

The location where the printer was powered was identified as a problematic power area with excessive inrushes. An Innovolt® electronics protection device, Power Manager 20, was installed on the machine to identify power disturbances, the frequency of the disturbances, and their impact on the copiers reliability.

During the short evaluation period, Power Manager 20 identified one brownout, seven power outages, and 14 voltage sags. With the Innovolt device protecting the copier, however, none of these disturbances resulted in a service call. Other equipment at the location – protected by competitive surge protectors but not by Innovolt’s solution – continued to fail, generating service calls and the costly replacement of various boards and components.

The Innovolt installation resulted in a four-fold increase in the copier’s production to nearly 30,000 prints between failures within the first 30 days. In the following 60 days, production rose to a high of 61,040 prints between failures and an average print volume of 54,862 between failures. To date, there have been no failed boards, NVRAM, or sensors.

With Innovolt’s power protection technology, the office products distributor was able to save the reputation of its copier by proving to the customer that the problem was related to power issues. The company also created goodwill by offering a resolution to the cumbersome issue that had plagued the account for five months. The non-profit benefited from increased productivity and reliability, with the customer stating, “Ever since we got that little black box, it has been the best copier we’ve ever had.”
